Old Koloa Town, a historic sugar plantation town, and the modern beach resorts of sunny Poipu offer contrasting views of the island’s past and future.
Poipu is the jewel of Kauai’s south shore (see map), where condominiums and luxury resorts have lined the gorgeous coastline in response to the influx of sunseekers. The coastline is ideal for great swimming and luxurious sunbathing, where the nearest chilled mai tai and gourmet fish sandwich are just a driftwood’s throw away.  The beaches around Poipu are ideal because they offer something for everyone—gentle wading pools at Poipu Beach Park (see Poipu detail map), snorkeling at Longhouse Beach near the Beach House Restaurant, exciting bodysurfing at Brennecke’s Beach (see Poipu detail map) and challenging boogieboarding at Shipwreck Beach (see Poipu detail map), fronting the Hyatt Regency Kauai. Be sure to check with on-duty lifeguards or local residents for current water conditions.
