Kohala is a land of contrasts. Often referred to as “the gold coast,” the Kohala Coast is home to the island’s best white sand beaches and world-famous golf courses, as well as the Waikoloa luxury resorts. Along this coast you’ll see beautiful sunsets from beaches blessed by ideal weather nearly every day of the year.

Nearby Kawaihae,
Highway 19 winds up to the cooler elevated ranchlands of Waimea and the home of one of the largest privately owned cattle ranches in America. After a day baking on the beach or swimming in the sea, visitors can repair to the cooler reaches of Kamuela (Waimea’s other name), where hearty steaks or fresh fish dinners are served up in cozy restaurants. Daytime activities in this area include horse-back riding, shopping, gourmet dining and aerial tours into the Kohala Mountain Range.

Waimea or Kawaihae to Pololu Valley Lookout: There are two ways to reach the northernmost coastline of the Big Island: the lower seaside road or the upper road through the mountains.

The coastal route (
Highway 270) through Kawaihae offers beautiful views of the ocean and tiny secret beaches, and along the way you can often see the island of Maui and Mount Haleakala rising in the distance across Alenuihaha Channel.

Highway 250 is a picturesque winding road that runs upland from Waimea through the Kohala Mountains to the quaint towns of Hawi and Kapaau. Take along plenty of film to capture shots of Pololu Valley Lookout. There are some fun shops and casual dining spots in both towns, or you can bring along your own fixings and enjoy a picnic atKeokea Beach Park.
